The Effect of Korean Panax Red Ginseng Supplementation on Antioxidant Enzymes Activities and Lipid Peroxides in Korean Men

Abstract
This study was performed to examine the effect of Korean red ginseng on antioxidant enzyme activity and lipid peroxides. Healthy men who were not diagnosed any type of disease were included in this study and subjects were randomly assigned to Korean red ginseng or placebo group. We measured anthropometric parameters, serum lipids, antioxidant enzymes activities, and lipid peroxide concentrations before and after the 8 weeks intervention period. After supplementation, Korean red ginseng group showed significant increasement of Superoxide dismutase (P<0.05) and glutathione peroxidase (P<0.05) activities, decreased tendency of malondialdehyde (P<0.1) and oxdizied LDL (P<0.1) concentrations. In addition, net differences of glutathione peroxidase activity (P<0.05) increased and malondialdehyde (P<0.01) and oxdizied LDL (P<0.01) concentrations decreased significantly in Korean red ginseng group compared with placebo group. The result of present study demonstrated the supplementation of Korean red ginseng for 8 weeks may protect LDL cholesterol from oxidative stress and increase antioxidative enzyme activities.
